Fruit flies are an excellent experimental model system to study molecular mechanisms in the context of tissues and development. During oogenesis, mothers synthesize stockpiles of NPCs that are stored as cytoplasmic membrane sheets, an organelle termed annulate lamellae (AL). We found that mothers pass on these stockpiles to the embryo in order to provide storage during early development. We are interested in understanding how microtubule-dependent transport, mRNA localization and biomolecular condensation at membranes interplay during oogenesis to synthesize AL and how exactly they are subsequently inserted into the nuclear envelope. These processes are important across animal kingdom for reproduction.
